The Yates Roadbuilding team wanted to expand into contract crushing while also streamlining their machinery procurement. This meant they needed powerful, mobile machines from the same dealer. Having worked with Powerscreen of Washington for more than a decade, they turned to them again to deliver.
A big operator in the Southwest Oregon region, Yates Roadbuilding has built its reputation and experience working on big infrastructure developments for more than 30 years. As a tight-knit family business, their success has been built on reliable equipment, an experienced team and the strength of their relationships, both with partners and customers.
This region’s climate makes its construction industry unique. The cold, wet winters means the window for quarrying, crushing and roadbuilding is slightly restricted. For the Yates Roadbuilding team, this signalled a big opportunity.
“Having first met Dan Bianchini with Powerscreen of Washington in a previous quarry, it made sense to get in touch with him to talk through new opportunities,” says Spencer Yates, Owner of Yates Roadbuilding. “We were already taking material and using it for roadbuilding projects, so it made sense for us to help customers on their quarries. For this, we needed quality mobile crushing and screening equipment.”
Power that Yates depends on
Having purchased 10 pieces of equipment from Powerscreen of Washington, the team set up crushers and screeners on two customer sites in Oregon. In Brookings, they were running a Powerscreen Premiertrak 400X jaw crusher and Powerscreen 1300X Maxtrak cone crusher. In Elkton, a 1300X Maxtrak was also operating alongside a Powerscreen Premiertrak 450 jaw crusher.
Both setups were processing coastal basalt for road base and construction projects in the region. Thanks to the heavy-duty engineering and powerful performance of Powerscreen machines, the Yates team can deliver efficiently and reliably in tight weather windows.
This includes the Premiertrak 400X jaw crusher, which is now trusted by operators across a range of applications, including construction, demolition, recycling, mining and quarrying. Its robust construction, which includes a large hopper and heavy-duty feeder system, enables a continuous flow of material, with an output potential of up to 441 tons per hour.
Dependable, it’s also easily mobile thanks to a durable track chassis, something that’s essential for the Yates team as they move from one customer site to another. Setup is also made easier thanks to a hydraulic setting adjustment system, which means product size requirements can be easily selected. In this case, the machine was producing 3,000 yards of 6-inch minus material a day.
Similarly, the Powerscreen 1300X Maxtrak cone crusher was producing high volumes of material to a range of specifications. This included producing up to 3,000 yards of 3-inch minus a day, 2,000 yards of an inch and 1,000 yards of ¾ minus. Designed to take on sub-base and aggregates, this machine has a reputation for achieving excellent cubicity, throughput and reduction ratios.
Powered by a 550hp Scania engine and with a Terex-designed cone, this machine can deliver proven power and material quality. The direct drive makes it fuel efficient, while the cone feed box has level control to maintain choke feeding. Plus, it’s highly portable, making it an ideal choice for the Yates business.
On the Elkton site, this is combined with a Premiertrak 450. Another high performance machine, it’s ideal for medium scale operations. A two-piece grizzly feeder allows for efficient material flow into the crushing chamber. While the independent pre-screen option helps operators working with high fines materials achieve a higher quality, cleaner end product.
Spencer has been thoroughly impressed by this new equipment. He says, “From day one we’ve had high production and high reduction rates. The direct drive design of the 400X has a lot more crushing power, the 1300 is a beast and a crown jewel of our fleet. Production across the board is always extremely high.
“With the newer equipment, we’re getting a lot more uptime too. The telematics on our machines allow our techs to diagnose any issues with the operators on site. Making repairs more efficient for the customer and maximizing the productivity of these machines.”
Support that Yates relies on
Beyond the power and portability of the machines, it was the support of the Powerscreen of Washington team that made the dealer number one choice for Yates’ expansion plans. Especially after experiences with previous dealers, who offered little support and were tough to communicate with, this was key for the team.
Spencer says, “We have had great success with the machines we’ve bought from Powerscreen of Washington. The support we receive from Dan has been exceptional. He understands our business and is always available when we need him, which makes their dealership a trusted partner. It’s a big reason why we continue to invest in Powerscreen equipment.”
Dan Biachini, Sales Manager for Powerscreen of Washington, added, “The relationship with the Yates family goes far beyond equipment sales. We’ve worked closely together for years, and I am confident they know what it takes to succeed in this industry. I’m just glad we have earned their trust as a long-term partner in providing them with the equipment, parts, and service they need to optimize their success.”
